The BRC Foundation Delivers A Mammoth Financial Windfall For Community Canteen

The BRC Foundation has delivered a mammoth financial windfall for the Community Canteen charity. Community Canteen is a volunteer-run organisation which provides wholesome meals for some of the 10,000 plus homeless people in Brisbane.

Across two Saturday BRC race meetings on October 5 (Doomben) and October 12 (Eagle Farm) a total of $28,800 was raised for charity. The bulk of the proceeds came from a lunch attended by over 100 people in the Hometurn Restaurant at Doomben.
A raffle with several high-profile prizes including a private suite at Eagle Farm or Doomben plus $1000 hospitality package and a Brisbane Lions jumper signed by all the AFL premiership squad resulted in a “sold out” message from ticket sellers.

Auction items also attracted spirited bidding.

Special guest speaker at the function was former world boxing champion Michael Katsidis who related his roller coaster life and his desire to now help others who have fallen on tough times.

The 50-50 charity raffle the next week at Eagle Farm raised $4200 for Community Canteen.

BRC Foundation chairman Richard Morrison said Community Canteen was a very worthy organisation to support. “The volunteers many of them with over ten years of service do a wonderful job providing thousands of meals each year for people living such a tough existence,” Morrison said.

The BRC Foundation in conjunction with Licensed Clubs - Gallopers Sports Club and Souths Leagues Club – delivered financial community benefit of $646,693 last financial year.

Community Canteen director Mike Andreotti was stunned by the level of support the BRC Foundation had directed to his organisation. “It’s not just the money the Foundation has generated for us. We also have connected with several people offering assistance especially Darren Wilson of Wilpak who has been extremely generous in providing pork product for our two kitchens,’’ Andreotti said.

Racing Club will host a 50-50 Charity Raffle at each of the upcoming racedays of Ladbrokes Spring Racing Carnival to help raise much-needed funds for five different charity organisations.
